First, there was the history of the United States. Then, there was A People’s History of the United States. Now, there is A Renegade History of the United States, by a man with a name almost as iconoclastic-sounding as Zinn: Thaddeus Russell, who was fired from a gig at Barnard for (he claims) teaching his students that contemporary Americans owe many of the freedoms we currently enjoy, not to the heroes in the history books, but to drunks, prostitutes, pirates, hobos, and the like. Since he wasn’t doing much after he got fired, he wrote a book about this renegade history. Soon, he’ll be signing that book at Vroman’s. You can see him yourself. His name is Thaddeus.
