Mt. Wilson Threatened; Station Fire Update

Published: Monday, August 31st, 2009

Mt. Wilson Observatory in its early days

Mt. Wilson Observatory and its famed 100-inch telescope, not long after it was built in 1917

It looks like the hillside residential neighborhoods from La Crescenta and La Canada to La Vina and north Altadena are in less peril as of Monday morning; concern is more focused on the homes in and near Acton, where at least 18 structures have burned, and Mt. Wilson, home to many telecommunications towers that serve all of L.A. as well as to the historic and beautiful Mt. Wilson Observatory. As of 7:30 Monday morning, firefighters had still been able to keep flames away from the observatory and towers, but fire officials were warning that the risk remains grave.

Here’s a link to UCLA’s webcam image, updated every few minutes: webcambiglook/wilson.html. Note that astronomers and concerned people from around the world are clicking on this site, so it is slow to load. Here’s an image from a few minutes ago — no sign of flames or close-in smoke plumes, I’m happy to say:

We’ll remind you that the best source for local fire news is the remarkable Altadenablog, run by Timothy Rutt. When this is all over we’re going to find a way to thank him.

Our friend Anton Anderson shared photos on Facebook of the views from his parents’ house in the Meadows area of northwest Altadena. All looks safe now, but the fire came very close.

Plus a 2nd Yes to thanking TR de ADBlogger. I’ve already said we should at least get him a(nother) nice meal at one of AltaDena’s many fine restaurants for his sacrificial efforts!
