Celebrate Mexican Independence Day with…the English Beat?

This may seem an odd juxtaposition, but Villa Sorriso, Bar Celona, and ix Tapa Cantina presents this year’s Villa Fest featuring the band who brought us “Mirror in the Bathroom,” “Tears of a Clown,” “Save It For Later,” and “I Confess.” Visiting the English Beat’s website and checking out their videos (circa 1979) has elicited—we admit it—huge smiles, sore cheeks, finger snapping, and some really embarrassing chair dancing.

The English Beat will be joined by the Spazmatics, Mundo Vacio with Vampiro from Juguares, and the Black Outs. DJs will be represented by Eddie One from Latino FM, DJ Hem, and DJ Los from Power 106. Doors open at 3 p.m. with a hosted bar and hors d’oeuvres offered from 3:30-4:30 p.m., though taco and food vendors will also be on hand with Mexican Independence Day specials. “Rocking” clothing and jewelry vendors will be selling their wares.

The website welcomes Pasadenans to “join us for mayhem, food, drinks, great music & debauchery under the sun in Old Town Pasadena!” That’s a loaded proposition.

Have fun, be safe, and Viva Mèxico and the English Beat!
