Sure Is Quiet

Nov 1, 2010

A detail of Incidental Calendar, by Karen Green

It took us far too long to mosey down to South Pasadena to see Sure Is Quiet, the current show at SPACE, a gallery and art center on Mission. And we’re here to tell you that if you haven’t seen it yet, you need to get there before it closes on Saturday.

On display in the bright, white-walled storefront gallery are hauntingly beautiful paintings and mixed-media collages by Karen Green, the widow of acclaimed writer David Foster Wallace, who committed suicide two years ago. Green created these pieces after his death, and they focus on language, with words and text images running through each piece. Many pieces also exude an ephemeral, ghostly feeling, and impart a sense of distance and loneliness.

It’s worth going out of your way to see this impressive show before it closes.
