Sings for Supper: The Blue Plate Special

Jan 27, 2013

BluePlateSpecialIt’s an interesting combo: jazz and jokes.

Performances à la carte hosts an evening of music and comedy on Tuesday, February 5th, featuring singers Carla Jaime Perez and Afton Hefley, plus vibes man Nick Mancini and comedian Nick Omana.

“A blue plate special is generally comfort food,” says Perez. “Perfect for tougher, more challenging times like these when the economy is depressed and we’re feeling in need of some cheering up and fun.”

A classically trained opera singer as comfortable performing riffs, rhythm and blues, gospel and cabaret as arias, Perez will sing an array of jazz originals and standards.

Joining Perez are instrumentalists Gary Blumer, piano, Tony Dumas, bass, Andy Sanesi, drums, and guest artist Nick Mancini on vibes. The evening’s menu will also include “a special starter” – a performance by up-and-coming singer/songwriter Afton Hefley.

“Nick is one of the best vibes players anywhere,” says Perez. “He has a wonderful reputation and was named Vibes Summit Honoree last year by the Los Angeles Jazz Society. He is an amazingly gifted composer as well. In fact, Afton, who is an equally talented songwriter herself, will perform some of Nick’s songs for us plus a few of her own.”

Nick Omana is a comedian and for four years has been the live announcer for NBC’s Last Comic Standing. “I had just spent time with Nick, which is always a laugh fest,” Perez explains. “So I thought it would be a great combination – jazz and jokes.”
