Shop Small, Shop Local

This Saturday, November 24th is Small Business Saturday, which was begun by American Express in 2010. Now, mega-conglomerate American Express hardly exemplifies one’s notion of “small” (even in fantasy fiction), but if you can move beyond that, the idea of and the encouragement to shop at small, independently-owned businesses this holiday season is a kind of “spot on” in our book.

We’ll all probably still hit Target, American Eagle, and Ikea for items, but it might be worth the extra time and effort it takes to park and walk to the Soap Kitchen if you’re looking for incredible soaps instead of relying solely on the Body Shop, or buying chocolates from Mignon or Amara instead of grabbing a box of Whitman’s off the shelf at Rite Aid, or finding an extraordinary and original gift at Maude Woods, Ten Thousand Villages or Gold Bug instead of a standard item from Macy’s.

The Pasadena Playhouse District has a complete listing of events and shops in their area, including the special discounts that will be offered, and Old Pasadena Management District is also supporting Shop Small (as they call it). At the American Express website, you can type in your particular area like San Marino, South Pasadena, Altadena, or Montrose, and find a slew of small businesses near you that we’re sure would be mighty grateful for your patronage this holiday season.

What are you favorite small businesses?
