Shakespeare’s Summer Festival

Jul 8, 2011

A scene from last summer's rendition of A Midsummer Night's Dream

A Shakespeare festival in… La Cañada? At a Catholic girls’ high school? Sure, why not! This summer Vanguard Repertory Company is staging the La Cañada Flintridge Shakespeare’s Summer Festival, and they’ve rented the spectacular, view-rich Flintridge Sacred Heart campus for the duration. This year brings three productions, two of which are world premieres developed by Vanguard Rep. The three productions are as follows:

– The opening performance, which is running now, premieres a play by Matthew Kellen Burgos called After the Autumn. It examines the effects of post-traumatic stress on the human psyche and soul through the story of two men, a psychologist and a veteran, who are thrust together by circumstance . The play, inspired by Shakespeare’s Macbeth, is a contemporary tragedy that asks: Are we fated to be who we are, or do we have the power to change our path?

– The second performance will be a short, original piece adapted by Sam Ross starring Juliet, Desdemona and Ophelia–Shakespeare’s Tragic Women.  The play examines the nature of their choices by joining them in purgatory for an innovative piece combining text, movement and song.

– Finally, showing on days opposite from After the Autumn, will be Vanguard Rep’s original adaptation of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. This adaptation first premiered in 2010 and will be further adapted for this summer’s performance.
