We first heard her in the days of Air America on AM radio. A part of a liberal line-up throughout the day that informed and reflected the feelings of those of us on the left who were floundering in our anger and despair during eight years of the Bush administration. (For our right wing friends, we express sympathy, as we know they must feel that way presently, entering into the fifth year of the Obama administration.)
The “her” of which we speak is none other than Rachel Maddow, now host of the “Rachel Maddow Show” on MSNBC.
Vroman’s is hosting an author’s event as she continues to promote her well-received book Drift: The Unmooring of American Military Power.
Since we attended one such event in Santa Barbara, we can say that if you are of a like political mind and are interested in this topic, then you will thoroughly enjoy yourself. At the Arlington Theatre, she presented the case that America has made a “dangerous drift into a state of perpetual war,” with which we Americans are “weirdly at peace.”
Maddow is a master of her topic and passionate about the discussion she believes we should be having about “how, when, and where to apply America’s strength and power—and who gets to make those decisions.” She earned a public policy degree from Stanford (1994) and was also a recipient of a Rhodes Scholarship. She began her postgraduate study in 1995 at Lincoln College, Oxford. She achieved a Doctor of Philosophy in polictics from Oxford University in 2001.
The talk we attended remained on topic, was informative, sobering, funny, and a thoroughly lovely way for a well-read liberal to spend an afternoon.
