Funny Valentine

Hilarity ensues at A Noise Within

Back in the fall, the Glendale-based repertory company A Noise Within staged the classic modern farce Noises Off!, and it was such a hit that they’ve brought it back for a brief extra run in February. I caught the show in this brief rerun, and I’m here to tell you: If you have time this weekend, and you want to bring some levity to your Valentine’s/President’s weekend, you need to get to Glendale.

Michael Frayn’s 1982 farce is a play-behind-a-play, a broadly comical story built around an overworked English theatre troupe that’s on the road with a two-bit comedy. This is a fast-paced, timing-is-everything play, and the seasoned team at A Noise Within does a brilliant job of it. Each actor is spot-on, each movement is seamlessly choreographed, and the laughs grow as the chaos builds. Every TV comedy writer, director and actor should see this production several times over to learn a thing or two. But once for Valentine’s Day might have to suffice.

Noises Off!
Runs through Sunday, February 14

  1. Isn’t ANW planning to move within Pasadena’s borders?

  2. Colleen Dunn Bates says:

Yes, they’re moving to Pasadena, as is Red Hen Press. We just need to get the Playhouse back and vibrant and we’ll have one of the most vibrant arts communities in the state!

  3. Petrea says:

Noises Off! is one of the funniest scripts ever! These guys ought to do a bang-up job of it.

  4. Lisa Groening says:

I saw it too and thought it was very, very well done. We Glendalians will be very sad to see ANW move to Pasadena, but it will be one more reason to hang around over here.
