There’s a little section of Mission Street in San Marino that’s really happening. You read that right: San Marino! Three stores — deVelle, e.g page and Single Stone — have suddenly made this one of the most fashion-focused blocks in the whole San Gabriel Valley.
DeVelle, a well-established women’s clothing store known for its personalized service, recently moved five doors down the street to 2509, a modern, light-filled new space. Spring has sprung with lots of color and great new pieces from the same fine lines the store has always carried — Yanci Fugel, Peter Cohen, Babette — and some new European designers as well. And the folks at deVelle are happy to say they have their own parking (for this row of stores) in back.
The next store, at 2513, is newcomer e.g. page, owned by mother-daughter team Pattie Behrens and Courtnay Page, who also own Therapy at Paseo Colorado. (It’s one of my favorites; I love to say to my psychiatrist husband, “I’m going to Therapy.”) The new store, named for Courtnay’s girls, Emerson and Grayson, has lots of denim, great sweaters and a finely edited selection of shoes, handbags and jewelry. Isabel Marant, a hard-to-find French line of eclectic pieces with a bohemian edge, shares space with Jenni Kayne’s sophisticated American designs. Rag and Bone, Habitual, Citizens of Humanity and Vince are tried-and-true lines that round out the offerings. I picked up a sweater of the softest cashmere by Marika Charles— it was on sale, so I couldn’t help myself!
I hate to admit mistakes (and I sure hope my kids aren’t reading this), but I did make a big one in not including Single Stone in the updated Hometown Pasadena. I found this gem (pun intended) of a jewelry store while shopping next store at e.g. page. Just walking into this two-year-old boutique is a jewelry addict’s dream come true — it has one of the most beautiful collections of pieces, many of them one-of-a-kind, that I’ve ever seen. Owner Corina Limon Madilian says the focus is on individualized attention and helping customers “create their own signature pieces.” Along with its own Single Stone designs, the cases hold creations by Temple St. Clair, Slane and Slane, Monica Rich Kosann, Pomellato, Carelle, Arunashi, Gurhan, Arman, Samantha Louise Kothari and Stephanie Albertson, among others.
