CatCon for Lovers of the Feline

Aug 6, 2017

We had to click the link to confirm the reality, and yes, there is such an event as CatCon and it is coming to Pasadena this weekend, August 12-13.

CatCon, now in its 3rd year, calls itself “the convention with cattitude,” which might lead some folks to stop reading and others to say, “Aw, cute!” For the former, have a lovely day. For the latter, please continue on…

The mission: “To spread joy and goodness to cats and the people who love them.”

CatCon’s stated core values:

—Debunking the Cat Lady Myth:
We are changing the negative perception of the “crazy cat lady” and proving that it is possible to be hip, stylish, and have a cat, simultaneously.

—Shelters Far and Wide:
We support animal shelters, both local and nationwide, in all of their efforts from adoption to feline healthcare to spay/neuter.

—Adopt Don’t Shop:
We vigorously promote  “adopt, don’t shop.” Each year, millions of adoptable dogs and cats are euthanized in the United States. When you adopt instead of buying, you’re saving lives.

—Inform, Educate and Entertain:
Through engaging seminars and activations, we strive to educate and inform people in entertaining and outside the box ways.

Okay, but still… what is CatCon?

CatCon® is where pop culture and cat culture converge, showcasing some of the world’s top cat-centric merchandise, conversations with those at the epicenter of the cat world, incredible activations, and one of the biggest adoption lounges ever.

CatCon was created by Susan Michals. Its adoption partner this year is the Pasadena Humane Society & SPCA. For star power, the event’s presenting sponsor is Rachael Ray’s Nutrish line for cats and the official charity beneficiary is ISF. CatCon will donate $2 of every ticket sold to ISF, the Ian Somerhalder Foundation. Ian Somerhalder is otherwise known as Damon Salvatore in the Vampire Diaries.

What’s on the kitty menu for the weekend?

Over 100 vendors will be exhibiting, from Neon Litter and The Sweater Cats to Meowbiotics and the Meow-gical Box (for “crate joy). And let’s not forget Ferocious Kitty and Feline Yogi, as well as Feminist Felines and Hummus the Cat.

Feline Yogi: “The Zen way to scratch, lounge, and play” (designed after the creator Paige tired of sharing her yoga mat with her numerous cats).

Saturday, August 12 offers events such as a discussion with owners about taking care of animals with special needs; a Meet & Greet with Julie Newmar, the original Catwoman; a CatCon video fest featuring model and activist Tess Holliday; a lecture on the history of cats by Dr. Paul Koudounaris; and last, but certainly not least, a Meet & Greet with Chris Poole, maker of cat videos, owner of Cole and Marmalade.

Sunday, August 13 has “Kitten Lady Tells All.” CatCon is partnering with the ASPCA and the “Kitten Lady” aka Hannah Shaw will be sharing her experiences as “a neonatal kitten warrior!” The ASPCA may be found at booth no. 208.

Sunday also has Aaron Benitez with Prince Michael and Phil, aka “Aaron’s Animals.”
