Occidental College

Okay, so it’s not actually in Pasadena, but since Oxy is just a few miles west in Eagle Rock, it might as well be. Many of its faculty live in Pasadena, its alums are all over town, and when students want fun on a Saturday night, they head for Old Town.

One of Southern California’s oldest colleges, Occidental was founded in 1887 and today is one of the finest liberal arts colleges in the west. With just 2,100 undergrads and a nearly ten-to-one student-faculty ratio, it’s a small, tightly knit community with a devoted corps of alumni and a top-notch faculty. Unlike at some liberal arts colleges, majors go beyond philosophy, comparative lit and women’s studies to include geology, cognitive science and geophysics; Oxy is known as an excellent place for premed work.

Students also may take classes at Caltech and Art Center. Extras include a well-rounded roster of NCAA Division III sports teams, 100 clubs (the Bad Movie Club, a Hawaiian club, and Quidditch are just a few); a peaceful hillside campus centered around three Myron Hunt buildings; strong programs in theater, dance, music and visual arts; and many junior-year-abroad options.

Notable alums include President Obama (yes, he inhaled while at Oxy), U.S Congressman Jack Kemp (we think maybe he didn’t inhale), poet Robinson Jeffers, actor Luke Wilson, movie director and former Python Terry Gilliam and journalist Patt Morrison.

If you are new here, you might want to subscribe to the RSS feed for updates on this topic. It’s a pretty standard two-story motel, a little closer to the 134/2 freeway interchange than we’d like, but the Eagle Rock Inn is clean and carefully maintained, and many rooms are under $120 if you book online.  Internet and a continental breakfast are free, the pool is decent, and there’s a hot tub. A mile or so east on Colorado is the oh-so-hip heart of Eagle Rock, home to cafés and funky boutiques. This is a convenient spot for people visiting nearby Occidental College. […]
