Summer of Song

A scene from a recent PMC production

A while ago we profiled Sierra Madre principal and musical theatre maven Gayle Bluemel; now we’re back to sing her praises again, because it’s time to sign up for her Pasadena Musical Theatre summer program. Subtitled “You need more drama,” the intensive and intensely fun six-week program covers acting, voice, dance and stagecraft, culminating in two plays: Positively Wicked, a set-in-high-school spin on Wicked to be performed by the 7th-12th graders; and Happily Ever After, a fairytale melange to be performed by the 4th-6th graders.

Pasadena Musical Theatre is open to everyone, but its mission is to serve public-school students, so PUSD kids pay a mere $150 for the entire six-week program; non-PUSD kids pay $425, which is still reasonable for something of this scale. It receives no PUSD funding but does get support from the Pasadena Educational Foundation.

The program runs weekday mornings until 1 p.m.; before and after are very affordable classes in playwriting, piano, dance, acting and voice. To download the brochure, click here.
