South Pasadena is now home to Ladybug Music, where children and their parents are introduced to music from all over the world, exposed to varying musical styles, and even taught about pitch, tempo, melody and rhythm—through things like rhythmic chanting, play-along jam sessions, finger plays, and just plain silly time.
Creator Patricia Margarita Maertens is a professional musician, a prolific songwriter and an experienced producer, and she’s already had tremendous success at her Studio City location. Her childhood in the culturally mixed neighborhoods of South L.A. and Portuguese Bend, as well as traveling with her mother (from El Salvador) and father (from Germany) around the world, has significantly influenced her creativity and teaching. Her musical interests range from Billie Holiday, to the Clash, to Rickie Lee Jones, to Irish street chants. Maertens says her goal is to “inspire families to experience the great joy of exploring and discovering new music” and for children to have the “ability to keep a beat and match a pitch.”
Some parents we know say the Ladybug Music CDs are good enough for them to listen to even when the kiddies aren’t in the car. That must be why Red Tricycle nominated Ladybug Music for two awards: Best Music Class in L.A. and Best Kids Music CD.
