Wistaria!

In 1918, 12,000 people congregated in Sierra Madre for the first ever Wistaria Festival. It’s more than 90 years later, and we Sierra Madreans still love our big purple plant, planted in 1894 on what is now West Carter Avenue. It is, undoubtedly, an impressive specimen: over an acre in size, weighing 250 tons and bearing 1.5 million lavender blossoms. In 1930, it crushed a house.

This weekend, the private grounds containing this botanical beast will be open to the public. To see the plant, you need a ticket. You do not need a ticket, however, to enjoy the festivities in downtown Sierra Madre, the Art and Garden Faire, featuring 150 juried artisans, alfresco dining from local restaurants and 24 musical acts in six outdoor locations. Shuttles will be on hand to take people back and forth between the fair and the vine.
