Altadena Community Gardens

May 15, 2011

This colorful, fenced collection of 63 garden plots on the southwest corner of Loma Alta Park sits on the site of the former Mount Lowe Military Academy, which closed in the 1970s. The citizenry asked the L.A. County Parks Department for a communal garden, so with the help of the California Conservation Corps, walkways and four wheelchair-accessible raised beds were laid, and neighbors were soon growing carrots, tomatoes and beans. Water, tools and fertilizer from local stables are provided for an annual fee, and free workshops are offered on horticultural topics. Spotless restrooms are found in neighboring Loma Alta Park, a lovely and underused county park that also features and equestrian ring, tennis courts, a playground and a jumbo new recreation center.
