The Playboy Within

Apr 12, 2010

Geoff Elliott, co-founder and co-artistic director of A Noise Within, directs the company’s final play of the season, John M. Synge’s The Playboy of the Western World.  The once-controversial play sparked riots during and after its debut in Dublin in 1907, was booed in New York four years later, and resulted in the arrest of the Philadelphia cast on charges of staging an immoral performance – and has since been recognized as a masterpiece. Set in the remote bog country of County Mayo, Playboy’s poetic Irish wordplay tackles the same themes of love, survival and redemption as its companions in repertory, Awake and Sing! and A Comedy of Errors.

We just saw this last night, and it was really wonderful. Beautiful set, great acting and direction, and a really interesting play not often seen. I highly recommend this to classical theater fans.
