Christmas seems to bring out the Baroque in Pasadena Pro Musica, a chorus and orchestra committed to the performance of “distinguished yet less frequently-performed masterpieces.” Last year’s Christmas concert featured two composers we’d never heard of. This year’s show—a program of four sacred Advent cantatas—has only one name new to us: Dietrich Buxtehude, whose Kommst du, Kommst du, Licht der Heiden will be performed along with Scarlatti’s Cantata Pastorale: O di Betlemme altera, as well as two by J.S. Bach (BWV 62 and BWV 36 for you Bach-a-holics). There are two performances this weekend, so don’t worry about your Advent plans getting in the way of hearing this beautiful Advent music.
