I don’t know John Vorhaus, or how he pronounces his last name, but I think we can be forgiven for thinking it looks and probably sounds more than a little like “Voorhees,” as in Jason Voorhees, the, ah, moral center of the Friday the 13th movies. Ordinarily we’d allow this similarity to pass unmentioned, but there’s a really juicy coincidence here that requires your attention. This post’s titular event–John’s appearance at Vroman’s to celebrate the release of his “hippie lit” novel, Lucy in the Sky–happens this Friday. This Friday is the 13th. John Vorhaus is coming to Vroman’s on Friday the 13th. This is either a cosmic happening of some kind, or a really tricksy decision by the promotional team at Vroman’s. Anyway. The event itself is not so much a reading as it is a “60s era time-travelogue,” which is part slide show, part performance art, and part trivia quiz. Yes, with prizes. You might win a prize, for example, if you know the fate of “hot” Dr. Pepper, which apparently was a thing? Probably he’ll read from the novel at least a little, but either way this sounds like a pretty cool evening.
