Every Thursday until August 12, some of L.A.’s finest jazz musicians will grace Descanso Gardens for “The Evolution of American Jazz,” a seriously ambitious name for a concert series. In an unusual bout of permissiveness, Descanso is allowing outside food to be brought in for these shows—picnic suppers. Take advantage, if only so you can tell your grandchildren you once smuggled contraband in to Fortress Descanso.
This week’s act is the Robert Kyle Trio, playing jazz on the Brazilian side. An Altadena resident, Kyle is fluent in several styles; he has played with (get ready) Stevie Wonder, Michael McDonald, Natalie Cole, Jason Mraz, Vince Gill, Michael Bolton, Linda Ronstadt, Carole King, Brenda Russell, Lou Rawls, Della Reese, Chaka Khan, Jessica Simpson, Babyface and Kenny Loggins. Just to name a few. Chaka Khan! The rest of the regular Brazilian trio is Roberto Montero and Cristiano Novelli. Joining them at Descanso is special guest Hussain Jiffry. And who knows, maybe Chaka will show up.
