Slow Food USA has declared this Labor Day a “day of action” to demand better nutrition and better quality food in public schools. To draw attention to the cause, concerned civilians everywhere are holding “eat-ins,” community potlucks to eat and discuss the future of public-school lunches. Potluckers will sign petitions, call members of Congress and learn ways to spread the news. The eventual goal is to pass the Child Nutrition Act, increasing the federal funding for school-lunch programs by $1 per child so that schools can aford better, healthier food.
Monday will bring six eat-ins in Los Angeles County, and two close to our own Valley. In Highland Park the Milagro Allegro Community Garden will hold an eat-in. In Elysian Park our friend Jennie Cook will also hold a potluck. To attend, please come with a dish to share for six people, your family, friends and reusable plates, cups and silverware — your plate is your ticket!
