Alice LaPlante at Vroman’s

Aug 15, 2011

Her name is Alice.

Imagine you are suffering from dementia. You’re living your life as best you can, coping with your deteriorating mind, trying to remember what your children look like. You’re getting by. Then, the police start showing up at your house to question you about the murder of your best friend and neighbor, whose fingers were removed from one her hands—an operation which happened to be your professional specialty before the Alzheimer’s. You don’t remember killing her, but…?

Such is the drift of the story of Alice LaPlante’s Turn of Mind, narrated by the demented Jennifer. It sounds pretty cool. Our esteemed editor says it’s flat out “very good. A fascinating subject, told skillfully in an unusual way.” Ms. LaPlante will be at Vroman’s next Monday reading and signing.
