A Highbrow Weekend for Altadena Bohos

Published: Monday, October 19th, 2009

jazz art classical 630x687 A Highbrow Weekend for Altadena BohosA lively bunch of Altadenans and Pasadenans, led by Altadena historian Michele Zack and her colleagues at Altadena Heritage, are bringing back the spirit of legendary Altadenans Jiyayr Zorthian and Gus Albrecht this weekend, and arts lovers won’t want to miss it.

Fifty years after artist Zorthian and chemistry professor and musician Albrecht put on Concerts on the Crest, a combination jazz-classical concert and happening, Altadena Heritage is reviving the concept. The weekend kicks off on Saturday from 4 to 7 p.m. on the second-story courtyard of the 1920s mausoleum at Mountain View Cemetery. There’ll be a performance by jazz artists the Bohos, food from The Spot, drinks and conversation, and a show of Zorthian’s drawings and Albrecht’s writings. Plus the remarkable beauty of the mausoleum.

The happening restarts on Sunday at 1 p.m., when the show of the two pioneering free-thinkers reopens. At 4 p.m., cellist Diego Miralles and the Los Angeles Contemporary Ensemble will perform a Shostakovich and Ravel program, in honor of the Shoenfeld sisters, who played at the original Concerts on the Crest in the 1950s. Michele Zack will share some stories from that era, and be prepared to see people in cool ’50s garb. Wear your beret if you’ve got one.
