Before Jean Barrett’s find appears in Discoveries, we’re featuring it here so it gets the attention it deserves:
Red wines on offer last week at Bacaro
[Bacaro] 2308 S. Union Ave., Downtown, 213.748.7205, bacarolosangeles.com. Sun.-Thurs. 5 – 10 p.m., Fri.-Sat. 5 – 11 p.m. Wine bar. AE, MC. V. $ WHY Because you’re bored with most wine-bar offerings and tired of paying through the nose for a glass of wine. WHAT On a funky block between Pico-Union and USC is a tiny haven for wine lovers, where the wines of the day are artfully written in chalk on the blackboard walls. In back is a kitchen that turns out Venetian-style cichetti (small bites), including bruschetta, crostini, and such heartier dishes as grilled asparagus topped with a fried egg, and a deconstructed BLT made with Niman Ranch bacon; almost all the dishes are a mere . Bacaro is one of those spots you wish would open within walking distance of your house, a place where enthusiasm for esoteric Italian bottlings is matched by a menu of unfussy, simply delicious snacks. We’re nuts about the joint and juiced about the owners’ plan to open another outpost right downtown. WHO Oenophiles with more taste than dough from USC and West Adams.
