This place is a throwback–I’m pretty sure I saw Rod Serling musing on a stool in the parking lot. Schreiner’s has been in this location for 50 years, and in Burbank for ten years before that. So says the helpful frau behind the counter in the Bavarian dirndl. We expect a butcher shop when entering, but here is a little German world! It’s part dry goods store, sundries shop, deli counter and good butcher. The long refrigerated case displays endless foods that can be made of ground up animals… bratwurst, hearty knackwurst, spicy sausage, bockwurst, caraway flecked landjaeger, chewy salami. There are chops, sides, rumps, tongues smoked, boiled, preserved, frozen and aged. Shelves of German condiments await your slathering needs. Near the fridge loaded with German beers and American sodas, Formica lunch tables back into German sundries in case you’re fresh out of zahnpasta or handsalbe. Order your sandwich, then zip next door to Berolina Bakery for dessert.
