Set up in a parking lot behind a Duarte motel just off the 210 Freeway, Pondok Kaki Lima is one of greater L.A.’s brightest beacons of Indonesian cooking. The weekly food fair is a collection of about a half-dozen vendors, most of which specialize in a single dish but nonetheless serve many. Some focus on sate (skewers of sweet, charred pork), others on long-simmered curries and entire meals wrapped in banana leaves. Don’t miss the incredibly succulent pork sate from Sate Heidy — you’ll want to buy extra to take home. (And note that owners Heidy and Ambrosius cater, too, and their sate is a big party hit.) Sip a durian shake and stop by the nearby brick-and-mortar Indonesian market on the way out.
