Pan-sautéed lobster with lots of garlic, ginger and scallions
We’re going a little more upscale this time in our series on good-value dining in the SG Valley for recession-battered locals. Lobster is never cheap, but sometimes an occasion demands lobster, and if the budget doesn’t allow for the Palm, head for Newport Seafood in San Gabriel. Recently relocated from a small, grungier spot into a large and bright former coffee shop, Newport is handsome enough to attract business lunchers by day and upscale celebrators by night. And because the house specialties are four- to six-pound lobsters, as well as crab and aptly named elephant clams, this is a place for celebrating. Don’t bother with the rather glutinous hot and sour soup, and don’t feel compelled to try the Vietnamese dishes; just stick with the lobster, clams and excellent vegetables (especially the pea sprouts), and you’ll have a memorable lobster dinner for about $25 a head.

This is one of my favorite restaurants- not just here in LA, but anywhere.
The house special lobster is an amazing dish- it’s got everything- spice, heat, sweetness, huge chunks of perfectly cooked fresh lobster meat, really, just typing this is making me salivate.
The french style beef (can’t remember the name) is also really good, as is the salt and pepper calamari, clams in black bean sauce, and any other seafood.
Really, now that they’re in their new, spiffy digs, this place can’t be beat.
You should go right now. Seriously.
I love seafood and would love to try new places other than the Boiling Crab. Can’t wait to try this place out!
The lunch special is one of the best deals anywhere – less than $7 for soup, main course, steamed rice and hot tea.
The lobster is delicious, but I’d rather go for the whole spicy fish for dinner.
Use the money you save to visit one of the foot massage places a block away. $15 gets you an hour-long, full-body massage at Exotic Spa.
Susan– $15 for a full-body massage? Or a foot massage? $15 sounds too good to be true! Please share– we want to get good massage-therapy recommendations for our readers…. in fact, I just got a request for that.
