Let Them Eat Cheeseburgers

Thank goodness for 16-year-old Lionel’s grilling error or else an American dietary staple would never have been born—the cheeseburger.

Working at his father’s sandwich shop The Rite Spot circa 1924, young Lionel mistakenly dropped a piece of cheese onto a grilling hamburger. The nation owes the elder Mr. Sternberger a debt of gratitude for not firing his son on the spot.

In celebration of one of Pasadena’s more notable claims to fame (or is it?), the Chamber of Commerce presents Pasadena Cheeseburger Week, which runs from January 15th-20th. We at Hometown Pasadena suggest sticking to salad and soups for the next five days in preparation.

Local spots such as Noir Food & Wine, CRÊPEstudio, Lovebirds Cafe and Kings Row Gastropub will be offering their versions of this American classic, as well as cheeseburger-inspired dishes.

You can even vote online for your favorite nosh, taking the Cheeseburger Week Survey. So, whether you choose the Armenian Pita burger, the Holy Aioli, the Vertical Bison or a traditional CB, flex those stomach muscles and get ready to start eating burgers—cheeseburgers, that is.

Footnote: If you say grace, maybe throw in a “Thanks!” to Lionel.

Give me a cheeseburger (not the fast food kind) with grilled onions a tiny bit of mayo and I’m a happy camper. No lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and all that other stuff. Call me crazy…
