Guisados owner Armando De La Torre
It was only a short time after Guisados opened in Boyle Heights that it landed a coveted spot on Jonathan Gold’s list of 99 Essential Restaurants with tacos de guisado, handmade tortillas filled with flavorful helpings of braised meats and vegetables. Next month, Guisados plans to open its second location with a restaurant in Echo Park, where it is taking the former Sunset Boulevard home of La Esquinita, which has been painted a dark orange and its interior remodeled to accommodate the new tenant.
Owner Armando De La Torre said the menu of his Echo Park restaurant will mirror his original Boyle Heights location. But on weekends, Guisados Echo Park will also serve breakfasts featuring Mexican-American comfort food. We’re talking Spam (or wienies or papas) and eggs on a tortilla.
Long term, De La Torre, who is also planning to expand into downtown with a third location next year, wants the Echo Park Guisados to stay open later and also obtain the necessary permits to serve beer and wine. “I’m really excited about this,” said De La Torre.
