How many candidates can fit on the 13th Council District ballot?

Jun 12, 2012

There better be room for at least 12 names on next year’s ballot for the Council District 13 election.  L.A. Now reports that John Choi, an Echo Park resident and a member of the city’s Board of Public Works,  has become the 12th candidate to enter the race to replace termed-out Eric Garcetti as representative of Council District 13, which includes portions of Atwater, Echo Park , Hollywood and Silver Lake.  Choi is also the third Korean-American to compete in the election, which will be held in March 2013.

Choi’s biography on the Department of Public Works website provides some details about his background:

Choi previously served as Economic Development Director for the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor, AFL-CIO, a chartered Central Labor Council of the National AFL-CIO that represents over 800,000 workers and over 350 affiliated unions. He also served as Special Assistant to Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and as Senior Area Coordinator for Los Angeles City Councilmember Martin Ludlow.

The list of candidates may grow even longer, with Matt Szabo, Deputy Chief of Staff for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, also expected to run for the council seat, according to L.A. Now.
