The Altadena Best Fest

Sep 28, 2015

IMG_9558Begin the day with pancakes under the deodars and let Altadena Best Fest begin.

Art, crafts, music, and food. Best Fest features artisan ceramics, hand-crafted purses, handmade jewelry, hand-blown glass, mosaic tiles, textiles, and paintings.

For listening pleasure, on site will be Firebird Sweet, Cruise Control, the Licata Brothers, Bohemian Soul Riders, and the Altadena Baptist Church Worship Team. Pasadena Rosebud Academy’s cheer squad will be cheering and Pasadena Waldorf School students are scheduled to perform. There will be readings and dramatic acts, and kids will find craft projects and hands-on activities, including “fairy gardens” to take home.

Dream of adventures-to-be-had while touring Funky Junk Farms restored vintage vehicles. The team of Funky Junk—Johnny, Steven, and Ed—is made up of “long-time collectors and preservationists of vintage Americana,” lovingly restoring vintage trailers and RVs.

Besides the Kiwanis of Altadena’s “signature” pancake breakfast, satiate one’s hunger at Best Fest’s food vendors like Pizza of Venice, Gypsy Eats with Persian/Indian fusion, and Amy’s Patio Cafe providing desserts. and favorite. Gourmet food trucks include Hugo Foods with Asian cuisine (Hugo is an Altadena Farmers’ Market alum).

“The Salon” will be held on Friday, October 2, and is a juried exhibit of fine art. Hoopla! Emporium is sponsor of this year’s salon, “so be prepared to enjoy some great eats and hip music!” Ribbons will be awarded for the best oil, acrylic, and watercolor painting; traditional and digital photograph; mixed media, assemblage or installation; pastel, drawing, or print; computer-generated drawing or print; sculpture; and—for the quirky, wacky element—best use of a theme, this year being “Duck! A Festival of Duct Tape.”

The Salon is also known as The Art on Millionaire’s Row reception. The Altadena Best Fest evolved from The Art on Millionaire’s Row event and the Salon/reception is at the Altadena Public Library, 600 E. Mariposa St., 6-9 p.m. Everyone is welcome to this free event, to mingle and munch, and to meet the artists.
