Styling for Charity

He liked to mow lawns and garden. He became mesmerized with the effects of peroxide when he experimented on his own hair. After seeing a Vidal Sassoon team—so put-together and dashing—at McLaren Hall, he chose their image as a role model. He attended 9 high schools and as many different foster care homes in a 4-year span.

His name is Joseph Rene.

After starting at the Marinello School of Beauty and continuing on to another institution, Rene was told his slew of work hours were null and void; he’d have to start from scratch. He then attended Citrus College in Glendora, studying cosmetology and taking theater classes. He became a movie extra, interested in being in front of the camera, and landed enough jobs to join SAG and AFTRA. His first celebrity client (as a stylist) was Olympic champion Greg Louganis.

Rene fiercely believes in the inspirational ability of creativity, using his skill for hair styling and his gift of gab (his admission) to volunteer and work in collaboration with a multitude of organizations; Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, Wells House Hospice in Long Beach, Hillside foster care facility, an AIDS service center, Five Acres, and Pasadena’s Women at Work.

Now his friends and clients are the people he wants to honor and serve. One friend’s mother passed away from cancer several years ago and, now, this friend is fighting the disease herself. One client is bedridden and another has had to undergo a double mastectomy. Rene’s first CD cover (as a stylist) was for blues singer Candye Kane, who is battling neuroendocrine pancreatic cancer.

In response, Rene’s gearing up for the Avon Foundation for Women‘s 39-mile Walk for Breast Cancer, September 22-23, to be held in Santa Barbara.

So far, Rene’s reached a fifth of his goal of raising $5,000. To attract more donations, he’s organized an evening called “Pink Carpet” at Carmine’s Italian Restaurant in South Pasadena on Sunday, August 19th. Attendees will be offered a pink cocktail and hors d’oeuvres; Pacific Noize, a Hawaiian reggae band from Cerritos will be performing, as will Josè Promis (playing the piano). A silent auction will offer items such as 5 sessions for personal cycling classes at Cycle Annex, two dinners at Eden Mediterranean Cuisine, and specialty scarves from Louise Wannier of Truu Designs in Pasadena.

Joseph Rene currently works within Ambiance Salon & Day Spa on South Lake and is planning on organizing “Food for Thought,” to help leftover fresh and baked goods find their way to food banks and organizations that serve meals and offer bags of groceries to those in need.
