Lookin’ In on the Holidays

Nov 17, 2014

blog-look-in-1-615x419After the turkey has been consumed and before the mad panic of holiday shopping, allow yourself to be swept into the spirit of the season with the Holiday Look In home tour.

Four homes, from a Louis de Puget-Millar 1907 Arts and Crafts and a 1926 Monterey Colonial Revival overlooking the Arroyo Seco to a 2008 manse in South Pasadena built with recycled bricks from a century-old demolished warehouse, guests may roam gardens, grounds, and interiors seeing the seasonal decor provided by Ixora Floral Studio, Jacob Maarse, Drew Domenghini with Patterson’s Topiaries, and Margit Holakoui.

Throughout the self-guided tour, the Pasadena Symphony will be serenading guests who may also partake of the goods in the Holiday Look In boutique. Over two dozen vendors, including Ronelle Designs, Fabrinique, and Dillon Culinary, will set up in the lobby of the administrative building of the Ambassador Auditorium on St. John Avenue. Peruse the many vendors here.

Margit Holakoui is a Pasadena native who also attended schools in England, Norway, and Spain, eventually graduating from CSULA with a Bachelor of Arts degree. She began working at a florist’s in the 1970s, then freelanced for “premiere Beverly Hills designer Arthur Simon.” After opening her first store in 1984 in Monrovia, Margit and her husband are now established on Foothill Boulevard in Arcadia with Margit Holakoui Florist, as well as Robert’s Wholesale Florist.

Did you know that the Maarse family home has a 3-acre rose garden? Their signature Garden Roses are available April through December.

Want a rose that’s frilly and deliciously fragrant? Try “Yves Piaget,” a Romantica rose that grows upright on long stems. Prefer simple, shapely buds? “Olympiad” is the rose for you. Want a breath-taking flaming red? There’s “Dolly Parton,” which smells as sweet as it looks. (Jacob Maarse/rosegarden)

Over the past 45 years of fundraisers, the Committee has raised and donated over $3 million to the Pasadena Symphony Association, of which $100,000 was donated from last year’s proceeds.
