No, wait, that’s not what we meant (no handcuffs are involved). It’s books. Literally. And literary. And singing. For books.

March 17th, 2012 is bookmarked (see?!) for the first—hopefully, soon to be foremost—LitFest Pasadena. As that is only five months away and counting, to get the party started, our historic, integral Castle Green will be the venue for “Singing the Bawdy Electric,” the fundraiser to launch it all.

Drinks, good food and great music will be followed by what is being dubbed “sensual literary surprises.” (If you’re very good, you may get home all in one piece, but you might not be able to sleep for a week.)

Sponsorship levels begin at Literati and Bard, progress to Best Seller and Pulitzer Winner and culminate with Poet Laureate. We won’t announce the price tags attached to each, but suggest a visualization exercise of literary sugar-plums (and a plump wallet).

As its organizers say, “When we talk about cookbooks, you’ll be eating. When we discuss the city’s pub culture, you’ll be drinking. You’ll be performing your haiku while the kids take the lead in a Shakespeare scene.” They are looking to instill a fringe festival spirit, incorporating theater, music, slam poetry, cyberspace and as much more as their imaginative—and (hopefully!) well-funded—minds can create.

The project is supported by the Pasadena Arts Council, Public Library, Writing Project and Light Bringer Project. Participating authors include, but are not limited to, Lian Dolan, Janet Fitch, Laurie Ochoa, Gary Phillips and Jonathan Gold.
