The Pasadena Museum of History is calling all volunteers (or want-to-be volunteers):
Each year thousands of third and fourth-grade students come to Pasadena History Museum to take advantage of unique programs exploring the history and art of the western San Gabriel Valley. These learning experiences are especially memorable because they take place in historic Fenyes Mansion and its surrounding gardens, and feature numerous interactive opportunities.
The Museum is currently seeking education volunteers to assist the 2013-14 school year’s Junior Docents and My Masterpieces programs.
Volunteers must be:
18 years old and above
Available to work shifts between 9 a.m. and noon on weekdays
Able to commit to a minimum of 2 shifts per month during the school year
Physically be able to walk/stand for up to two hours
Interested in mentoring and supervising students
Pasadena Museum of History provides both classroom and hands-on training for new volunteers and conducts training sessions throughout the year. No special knowledge or skills required.
Junior Docents (Wednesday and Friday mornings): PMH trains an annual class of seventh and eighth grade students from local public and private schools to lead tours of Fenyes Mansion to third and fourth-grade classes. Local history is conveyed as the youngsters step back in time to discover what life was like in early Pasadena – its history, architecture, household furnishings, technology, social customs and lifestyle. Adult Volunteers are present to support and mentor the Junior Docent during the tours.
My Masterpieces: Painting the Beautiful (Tuesday and Thursday mornings): Developed in collaboration with PUSD and closely tied to visual arts curriculum standards, this award-winning art program focuses on Eva Scott Fenyes’s artwork and art collection. Adult Volunteers lead tours of the art pieces in Fenyes Mansion and discussions of varying artistic techniques; they also assist students in a hands-on sketching session of an historic fountain in the garden, and work with children on casting, costuming, rehearsing and filming their own silent movie.
