ECHO PARK –  After several years of planning and preparation,  work is expected to begin soon on transforming  empty lots next to a city recreation center on Patton Street  into an approximately half-acre park and community garden.

A ceremonial ground breaking was held last month and construction is expected to begin in the next few weeks on the $2.2 million Patton Street Park and Garden, according Jodi Delaney, Los Angeles Program Director for The Trust for Public Land, which has spearheaded the project.  The .57-acre park in the southern section of Echo Park is on the small side but planners are going to pack it will numerous features, Delaney said via email. The list includes:

  • Two play areas: One for ages 5-12, includes swing, merry-go-all (accessible merry-go-round), big slide and sand area; One for ages 2-5, includes sailboat play structure
  • An adventure path and waterfall and stream area
  • Adult Fitness equipment (6 pieces)
  • A meandering path, seating (two picnic tables and multiple seatwalls), drought tolerant plantings, shade trees, small turf area
  • Community garden, includes fruit trees, 8 beds, picnic table under a shade trellis, seating
  • Mosaic art and decorative fencing

“The Patton Street Park and Garden will be within a half mile of 17,000 residents, providing a unique outdoor place for families, children, teens and seniors to meet, play, and relax,” Delaney said.
