Highland Park — The Crochet & Knitting Club of the Highland Park senior center on Friday presented 200 bright red beanies for premature babies to the American Heart Association to raise awareness of congenital heart defects.

The beanies will be given to babies born in the month of February — which is American Heart Month — at about 20  Los Angeles County hospitals.

“We love it because we are getting the community engaged to be part of our organization in a fun way,” said association representative Kristine Kelly.

The 20 members of Crochet & Knitting Club have been working on the caps for a year, said Margaret Sosa, who leads the group. Sosa found out about the heart association program from a flyer a friend showed her. She realized that knitting the caps for preemies was not only a good way to help the community but it was something the group members would love to do.

Each member had to learn how to crochet or knit the small, fist-sized caps. Sosa spent two weeks helping the knitters get familiar and understand the cap patterns. Since most of the members speak Spanish, they sometimes asked Sosa, who is bilingual, to help them translate some of the instructions. Once the members learned the patterns, they started making their beanies and adding their own style.

“We were all excited to make the hats, but it was more special since we knew it was for the babies,” said Maria Guevara. “We love knitting and catching up with each other, sometimes we even forget to knit.”

Most of the members did from one to four of the red fuzzy caps.

“We love spending time with each other knitting and these hats were special since the babies are going to need them,” said Yolanda Gonzaga, who has been with the club for 10 years.

The Adult Senior Citizen Center in Highland Park has many programs to attend at no charge. If you want to be a part of the Crochet and Knitting class you can email the center at or call them at (323) 256-6866.
