Once Upon a Time, the oldest way to start a story, is also the nation’s oldest children’s bookstore. This coming Thursday, two-time Caldecott honoree Marla Frazee and Beach Lane Books editor Allyn Johnston will be there to discuss their recent collaboration, “Creating the Picture Book: an illustrator’s and editor’s perspective.” This is a rare opportunity, as children’s book editors rarely do public events. Frazee is a highly regarded children’s book author and illustrator, and a local treasure (her son was my classmate in high school). Johnston was formerly the editorial director at Harcourt in San Diego, until Simon & Schuster gave her her own imprint — the stuff of fairy tales. And hard work. And good judgment.
