POPS Does the Movies

Marvin Hamlisch

What else is new, right? Still, the POPS is a very fine orchestra, and hearing movie scores sans movie is an experience worth having more than once. It’s an eclectic selection of films this time around:

A Salute to Gene Kelly
An American in Paris
Schindler’s List
The Informant!

That last one in particular is an odd duck: Soderbergh’s genre-bending take on the true story of Mark Whitacre, an agri-business exec who turned informant on his price-fixing employer. It could be reasonably called a thriller, though most of the style’s usually tense notes are played for laughs—narrow, narrow laughs. But back to the subject at hand: The Informant! seems like an odd choice for a concert, as most of the music never rises above muzak. There is one original song, however: “Trust Me,” lyrics by Alan and Marilyn Bergman. And the music? Well, Marvin Hamlisch wrote it. Yes, that Marvin Hamlisch, the Principal POPS Conductor.
