SILVER LAKE — Two men loading a wood chipper parked on a Silver Lake street were struck from behind by a car this afternoon, with the impact severing both legs of one man and leaving the other with broken bones, police said.

The victims were struck at about 3:10 p.m. by a vehicle driven by a 72-year-old woman headed northbound on Glendale Boulevard near Bancroft Avenue, said Officer Manny Garza with the LAPD Central Traffic Bureau. The workers’ truck and wood chipper were parked next to the curb and out of the traffic lanes when it was rammed by the woman’s car traveling between 30 to 40 miles per hour, he said.

The 29-year-old victim had both legs severed between the ankle and knee; the 19-year-old victim suffered a broken leg. Both men were transported to County USC Medical Center for treatment. The driver was also transported to a hospital.

It’s still not clear what caused the collision. The case remains under investigation.
