Twenty-one outstanding local businesswomen were honored recently at the 12th Annual Women in Business Awards luncheon. State Senator Carol Liu and Assemblymembers Mike Gatto and Anthony Portantino hosted the event, which celebrates the power of women who serve as role models and contribute to the greater good of the business community.
Each year, the Women in Business Awards recognizes businesswomen who have contributed to the economic growth and well-being of Southern California. These women exemplify the broad range of accomplishments that women have achieved in our communities.
Business leaders from industries as diverse as healthcare services, media, arts and environmental services were represented as were recipients from local houses of worship and various non-profit organizations. Some notable recipients included Dr. Melissa Johnson, Institute for Girls Development; the Rev. Zelda Kennedy, All Saints Church; Mary Donnelly-Crocker, Young & Healthy and Jennifer DeVoll, Pasadena Community Foundation.
Recipient Dr. Melissa Johnson shared her thoughts on why is it still important to recognize women business leaders. “Everyday I am reminded by girls and young women that they are paying attention. As they imagine their own possibilities, they look to the adult women in their world for inspiration, mentorship and encouragement” she said. “Shining the light on the varied and creative accomplishments of women business leaders is important for our daughters and their daughters.”
In addition to the honorees, the three legislators presented updates from the Capitol on this year’s legislative session. Lisa Stevens, Vice President, Wells Fargo Bank presented the Keynote Address honoring women who show exemplary leadership and service to the community. KTLA’s Ginger Chan was Master of Ceremonies.
