Whisky & Poetry Salon: Three Years!

Nov 9, 2015

We’re struggling to acknowledge that it’s been three years (we blinked!) since we walked up six flights of stairs—though with a 3rd landing whisky pick-me-up—to a building-wide penthouse that was surprisingly open and intimate and where in a small corner of the space, mix-matched chairs and a sofa circled around a table crowded with candles, shot glasses, and bottles of whisky. We sat self-consciously among strangers, sweated a little as people volunteered to stand up and read a poem. After a round of whisky tasting, we relaxed and braved the room.

The event—the Whisky and Poetry Salon—was fun, eclectic, emotional, educational, delicious, and joyful.

Now, the Whisky and Poetry Salon celebrates its third anniversary and we highly recommend the experience. We are not a poetry aficionado or whisky connoisseur—and that doesn’t matter. The event is inclusive and welcoming. Depending on the guests, the vibe can be casual, high energy, introspective, or light-hearted, which is part of the allure.

Past salons have been held at private residences, as well as Huron Substation, B Black & Sons, Three Clubs, Traxx Bar.

At this event, which shall be held at a historic, private residence in Highland Park, attendees shall not be reading as there are some wonderful guests, including Luis J. Rodriguez, 2014 Poet Laureate of Los Angeles, and who is the founding editor of Tia Chucha Press (25 years and going!) and co-founder/president of Tia Chucha’s Centro Cultural & Bookstore in San Fernando Valley. The other guests are “three dynamic, young adult poets from the GetLit-Words Ignite organization, which fosters cultural understanding and creative expression among teens and young adults via dynamic performances.”

The many honors and accomplishments of Get Lit-Words Ignite poets include: an invitation to the White House; performances at the Kennedy Center, the Hollywood Bowl and The Queen Latifah Show; and a recent partnership with the U.N. for its “International Day of Peace” project. (Official text)

Besides listening to these poets and enjoying “lite bites” and flights of whisky, guests may take a mini-tour with the venue’s owner to see some of the home’s more “unique” features.

Seating is very limited, so if interested, we recommend purchasing tickets sooner rather than later. Whisky & Poetry Salon events almost always sell out.
