The perpetually gracious and smiling host and owner of El Portal Restaurant, Abel Ramirez, once again presents their yearly “Tequila Tasting” on Thursday, September 12th.
We indulged in last year’s festivities and they were quite an eye opener (literally) and, of course, informative (though an addled brain isn’t conducive to effective note-taking).
We did our best to sample the dozen or more tequilas, interspersing mini-shots with visits to the buffet and trying to focus in order to take a photo or two, while increasingly—and unintentionally—swaying more and more to the mariachi music.
A partial list of tequilas available for tasting: Patron, Sauza Hornitos, Semental, Cabo Wabo, Espolon, Don Julio, El Jimador, Azunia, and Olmeca Altos.
The evening is popular and the event is a crowded affair even before the official opening in the courtyard at 5:30. Abel and his son Armando are tireless hosts, greeting folks and taking a turn on the dance floor (which is wherever you happen to be at the moment).
El Portal’s Tequila Tasting: the tequila flows, strangers introduce themselves and talk with one another, smiles are huge and laughter is plentiful.
