It is said that the role of Thäis in Jules Massenet’s opera of the same name is “notoriously difficult to sing and is reserved for only the most gifted performers.” It’s also been called a “diva spectacle”¹.
An opera company does not decide to mount a production of Massenet’s Thäis and then look for a soprano to sing the title role. The only reason to produce this ultimate star vehicle today is that a company has a genuine star who wants to sing it. (Anthony Tommasini/The New York Times)
The L.A. Opera will present Thäis May 5th-June 7th, with Nino Machaidze in the starring role. “In 2008, she made a sensational debut at the Salzburg Festival as Juliette” in Romeo et Juliette. Since 2009, she has participated in three separate productions with the L.A. Opera.
The unforgettable Plácido Domingo will star as Athanaël, the ascetic monk who attempts to convert the courtesan to Christianity only to realize that the sin resides in his heart, not hers.
On May 8th, One Colorado welcomes L.A. Opera singers who will perform recitals from this local production of Thäis, and will be followed by a sing-a-long suitable for kids and adults.
The evening’s Maestro will accompany the singers on piano and provide a storyline narrative.
Attendees are welcome to choose between a variety of L.A. Opera masks and be sure to take and post a #DivaSelfie. Post on social media and find the image at Diva Selfie. Two 35-minute programs will be performed; the first at 7 p.m. and the second at 8 p.m. Seating is limited and available on a first come-first served basis.
Come be a diva!
