PUPPET UP! – Uncensored consists of 80 original Jim Henson puppets manned by six puppeteers who are as part of the show as their inanimate counterparts.
In 2006, PUPPET UP! (executive produced by Brian and Lisa Henson) was taped before a live audience at The Comedy Festival in Las Vegas. Sold out performances at the Melbourne International Comedy Festival in April of this year follow shows in Edinburgh (Festival Fringe), Aspen, off-Broadway, and Milwaukee.
What began as training for puppeteers to learn improv, which was shown in front of coworkers, turned into requests for actual, “proper’ shows. So, a “non-show training exercise” is now a theatrical hit. Part of the allure seems to be the fact that the cast rotates and every night the puppeteers include seasoned performers as well as rookies.
As the show is adult rated (18 years old and up), the audience can relax and “let loose.” Then just about anything may happen. This is puppetry for adults, closer to Jim Henson’s earlier work and adult humor, Kimberly Rily writes in her Life in LA review. Henson’s “subversive” and “intelligent nonsense” side is exhibited during PUPPET UP!
Come meet the Miscreant puppets with Al the Alien and a pug in a diaper. Be a little naughty this weekend.
PUPPET UP! – Uncensored is a demonstration of what happens when the perilous and provocative forms of traditional comedy improv are mixed with a bunch of irreverent puppets. (MuppetCentral)
