Hometown Girl Wins Caldecott

Jan 27, 2009

The most recent book by Pasadena’s own Marla Frazee, A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever (Harcourt), was just selected as one of three 2009 Caldecott Honor Books. The awards were announced today at the American Library Association meeting in Denver, Colorado.

Marla, a friend to all the Hometown Pasadena authors and an interview subject on this site about a year ago, has illustrated many children’s books (The Talented Clementine, Mrs. BIddlebox) and written and illustrated several others, including Walk On! and Roller Coaster. Inspired by a summer adventure had by one of Marla’s own three sons, A Couple of Boys tells the story of James and Eamon’s hilarious and action-packed week at Eamon’s grandparents’ house, where they go to Nature Camp during the day but end up learning more about life while hanging around the grandparents’ house, playing video games and eating waffles.

The Caldecott is the highest honor awarded to children’s book illustrators in the United States. You go, Marla!

You can pick up a copy at San Marino Toy & Book, Mrs. Nelson’s, Vroman’s, Flintridge Bookstore, Once Upon a Time and other area stores, or order it online from Vroman’s here.

Congratulations, Marla. Your books are wonderful; you deserve this honor. The old Ostrom Avenue gang is proud of you–even without awards!
    Love and hugs.
