She played the role of “Girl” in the TV movie The Christmas Tree…in 1958. Really? How can that be true? That’s 54 years ago. But, yes, Bernadette Peters was 10 years old when she received her first acting credit, and now she’s a veteran of the small screen, regarded on the big screen, and lauded for her work on stage. Many people will recognize her name from when she returned to Broadway in the 80s as Dot/Marie in the Stephen Sondheim-James Lapine musical Sunday in the Park with George and then Into the Woods. In 1985, she won a Tony for playing Emma in Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Song and Dance.
Luckily, the current generation knows her for her interpretation of Cinderella’s stepmother in the mixed race cast version starring Brandy and Whitney Houston (the prince is Filipino-American actor Paolo Montalbán who parents are played by African-American Whoopi Goldberg and Canadian Victor Garber of Russian Jewish descent—loved, loved, loved this version simply for these casting choices). Peters is also the voice of Sophie in the animated feature Anastasia starring Meg Ryan, John Cusak, and Angela Lansbury (another family favorite).
Along with resident Pops conductor Larry Blank and the Pasadena Symphony, Peters will be performing her favorite tunes from her songbook on Saturday, June 29th at the always enchanting (though never visited enough) L.A. County Arboretum.
Summer partners for pre-ordered meals with onsite pick-up, as well as food trucks, are San Marino’s magical Julienne, Marston’s, and chef Claud Beltran’s Claud & Co (which Caroline Purvis of Altadena describes as “delish and fun!”). Of course, all are welcome to bring their own picnic faire—maybe some of Michelle’s bruschetta (recipe revealed Tuesday’s in “Mangiamo”). Whatever victuals you choose for your picnic basket, don’t forget something to lubricate your vocal chords, ’cause you might just find yourself singing right along with Miss Bernadette.
