Antaeus: Close to Home

Mar 7, 2016

actorsWhen it’s so close you can taste it.

There are nine days to go to help Antaeus Theatre Group find a new home. More accurately, this acclaimed theatrical company has found a home at 110 East Broadway in Glendale—the lease is signed the plans have been approved—it’s just trying to pay for it.

Most often recognized as the Ferengi bartender Quark from the TV series Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, or Principal Snyder in Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Armin Shimerman is a Shakespeare and classical theatre devotee and currently the co-associate artistic director of Antaeus Theatre Group.

“The generosity of the entire company has been astounding,” says Shimerman. “We are blessed to have so many passionate people in our midst whose hearts are so devoted to the arts. Having emptied our pockets, we now look to a wider community to help build our new home.”

Antaeus was founded in 1991 “to celebrate and invigorate the classics.” This cooperative theater ensemble now has 180 classically trained, experienced, and working actors on its roster. At its current location in the Valley, Antaeus produces three full plays a year, stage readings, and several dozen table readings.

Academy acting students number 223 and partake of classes on improv, scene study and voice, while 172 arts education students are involved in Antaeus’ outreach programs that include artists’ workshops, creative writing, and post-show discussions. Another one of the elements that makes Antaeus is proud is its Classics Library with 6,500 books.

In June of 2015, Antaeus began fundraising for its renovation fund at its new location, 110 East Broadway in Glendale. The City of Glendale has approved the plans for the 7,600 square foot space, which will include an 88-seat main stage, a 45-seat black box theater, a library space that’s almost double the size of the current space, a proper green room with a kitchen area, expanded dressing rooms, a proper construction and prop area, and a lobby with a small art gallery space.

A Play On! Capital Campaign raised $1.3 million of the $1.8 million needed with 100% of the company members donating. Looking to find the balance, an Antaeus Kickstarter campaign was begun. With 9 days to go, the campaign has raised over $62,000 of the $75,000 needed.

As a reminder, Kickstarter funds are only honored if the donation goal is reached. On March 17, at 10:02 a.m., this final effort to fully fund the new location will end.
