Treasures Big & Small

This is no ordinary thrift store.

The Huntington Collection is located in a nondescript building on Fair Oaks Avenue near Fillmore in Pasadena—we drove by twice before noticing the sign; it’s easier to discern driving south on Fair Oaks than driving north. But once inside, one finds a small, cozy shop that feels like a bunch of grandma’s have tossed their lifes’ belongings on their way to a hip modern condo in swinging Florida (French Seventy-Fives all around!).

Party dresses from the 1950s, Burberry jackets, Harley-Davidson leather jackets and boots, and Hermes scarves are on display. How about a Tadashi silk 2-piece cocktail outfit with Judith Leiber shoes? Maybe add a vintage beaded evening bag.

Need furniture? In store today: a painted fruitwood finish credenza, an antique inlay coffee table, a mahogany French provincial hutch, and an Eastlake side table with a marble top and carved base. And let’s not forget the 1930s Weber baby grand piano with ivory keys. There are also shelves full of silver platters, serving trays, and bowls.

THC’s end of month sale is a huge attraction. Some people line up for hours before the doors open. But our good friend decided not to stand in line, though she had her eye on a stunning chaise she’d been circling for weeks. We are happy to report that though she arrived right as the clock struck twelve noon, she was successful in procuring her heart’s desire.

The end of the month sale is held the last Thursday of every month, except holidays, from noon to 6 p.m. Occasionally, it will be held on the last Saturday of the month, 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Those interested may sign up for THC’s newsletter, which provides reminders. Their next sale is Thursday, August 28th.

THC does not buy items. No charge is issued for appraisals and items are taken only on consignment or donation, but take note that all clothes are donated (even high end couture). THC will drive 10 miles to appraise, deliver, or pick up “with some exceptions of some areas where our trucks have difficulty getting to or too complicated to get to.” A charge is issued for picking up consignment items and for deliveries, but donation pick ups are free.
