One, because it’s imperative to be well fed (without overindulging and wanting to crawl back under the covers) and to be caffeine-infused before stepping through the front door. Two, this is going to take all day. Eat early, break for lunch, stay late (the Mall closes at 9 p.m.)

The Antique Mall is a wondrous maze of forty-five dealers with spaces of varying sizes. Objects of all types may be found here, from hobnail and Depression glass to traditional Japanese tea sets. From old hats to old photographic equipment.

From vintage—and unusual—toys to antique prams and sterling silver grooming kits.

From old radios to a lamp made out of a gas mask. From books to brooches, stemware to vintage dinnerware, and from photographs to historical postcards and prints.

From Carnivale masks to an Italian accordion.

Unsurprisingly, the dealers’ inventories are ever-changing, which is a good reason to make the Mall a regular go-to for shoppers who are of hardy stock, possess browsing prowess, and have a keen eye.

Through September 7th, Pasadena Antique Mall is having a store-wide sale.

It’s rather shameful to admit, but we’re usually one of the mad folks running out on Christmas Eve. It’s as if our brain blows one too many circuits and we grab the car keys and fly out the door, abandoning the annual tree decorating and leaving cookies to burn in the oven—then receiving that melodramatic call from our teenager, “Mahm! You left the cookies in the oven! The whole house smells like burnt men!” (Of course, she means the poor scorched ginger bread men, not the male family members.)

In a blur, we manage a final shop, looking forward to a restorative bourbon on the rocks even as we cross off the last item on the list. But as of today, that custom of holiday bedlam is behind us. We’re changing our ways—early holiday shopping.

And now we have the perfect place to start.

On the 1st Sunday of every month, Pasadena Antique Mall hosts the Appraisal Faire. Rudd Rudluff will look at assess one’s “treasures” and determine its monetary worth. Next Appraisal Faire, Sunday, September 6th. Hours: 1-4 p.m. Per item cost: $5 (no limit on number of items).
